Organismo especializado de las Naciones Unidas, creado en 1946 para contribuir a la paz mediante la promoción de la cooperación internacional en educación, ciencia y cultura.

Apoya los esfuerzos de los estados miembros encaminados a eliminar el analfabetismo, fomentando la ampliación de la educación gratuita, y actúa como centro de intercambio de ideas y conocimientos. En 1972 auspicio un convenio internacional para crear una lista de sitios culturales y zonas naturales reconocidos como Patrimonio de la Humanidad que gozarían de protección gubernamental (ver patrimonio de la humanidad). En 1984, EE.UU. se retiró de la UNESCO para protestar por lo que consideraba un enfoque antioccidental de los temas culturales por el organismo; el Reino Unido y Singapur se retiraron un año más tarde. El Reino Unido se reintegró en 1997, y EE.UU. hizo los mismo en 2003.
